Processors, Confusing Hardware!

From the time I was a young boy, I've been told about computer components and their importance to the computer as a processing machine. The brain of this machine is the central processing unit (CPU), but I'm very confused as to how it actually works. I know its function, but not how it carries out that function. This is something that has both intrigued and annoyed me since my obsession with computers.
